Rory Gallagher Statue Unveiled Outside Ulster Hall
A bronze statue of legendary Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher has been unveiled outside Belfast’s iconic Ulster Hall, celebrating his life, music, and lasting influence on the city.
The tribute, inspired by a 1972 Melody Maker magazine cover featuring Gallagher onstage at Ulster Hall, was created by Anto Brennan, Jessica Checkley, and David O’Brien of Bronze Art Ireland.
The unveiling ceremony drew hundreds of fans, family members, and local dignitaries, including Lord Mayor of Belfast Mickey Murray, who praised Gallagher’s “authenticity and talent” for transcending borders. Barry McGivern of the Rory Gallagher Statue Project Trust described the statue as a “fitting tribute” to a musician who made Belfast his second home.
“Rory came up to Belfast in 1967 and it was a vibrant music scene,” McGivern said. “In Belfast, with Taste, he would have played with John Wilson and Richard McCracken. They were a power trio and that helped to give him his wings, and the people of Belfast allowed him to flourish.”
Gallagher’s legacy runs deep in Belfast, recognised as a UNESCO City of Music. From iconic shows at Sammy Huston’s Jazz Club to packed crowds at the Maritime, the Donegal-born guitarist played a key role in shaping the city’s reputation as a hub for blues and rock.
2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Gallagher’s passing, making the statue a timely tribute. Renowned for his soulful playing, electrifying performances, and tireless dedication, Gallagher sold millions of records and influenced generations of musicians worldwide.
Donal Gallagher, Rory’s brother and former manager, reflected on his enduring impact: “It’s fitting that the city he loved so much is where his memory will be celebrated for generations to come. Belfast wasn’t just a place he performed; it was a city that shaped his journey and welcomed him like one of its own. From the early days when he played here, it became a second home, a source of inspiration, and a springboard to international success.”
The Rory Gallagher Statue Project Trust spearheaded the initiative in collaboration with Ulster Hall, Belfast City Council, and sponsors including the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Northern Ireland Executive, ICC Belfast, LQ BID, Girvan Architecture Services, and Pipelife Ireland.
Frank Girvan, a member of the Trust, expressed gratitude for the widespread support: “It has been many years in the making, and we are incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received from fans, fellow musicians, and all those who continue to show their commitment to keeping Rory’s legacy alive. From fundraising to performances, we’ve organised numerous initiatives, including the memorial statue in Belfast, to ensure that Rory’s contributions to music are never forgotten. We hope more people will join us in these efforts as we continue to celebrate the music and spirit of a man who changed so many lives.”
Acting Chief Executive of Ulster Hall, Iain Bell, highlighted the venue’s deep connection to Gallagher’s career: “The Ulster Hall has hosted countless legendary performances, and Rory Gallagher’s connection to this iconic venue is unmatched. This statue and event are not just about celebrating Rory’s career; they also reaffirm Belfast’s status as a cultural hub. It highlights the city’s vibrant musical heritage and its importance as a destination for music lovers worldwide.”
The project also aligns with urban regeneration efforts led by LQ BID. Chris McCracken, Managing Director of LQ BID, said, “We’re proud to support this initiative, as the statue is a wonderful reflection of the district’s rich musical heritage. We believe it will become a landmark that attracts visitors and supports future tourism, contributing to the continued regeneration of the area.”
