Belfast’s night-time economy could be set for a major lift with the introduction of a new late-night bus service, due to launch in November. Announced in September, the “night mover” service is designed to support the city’s hospitality, cultural and creative industries by improving transport links after hours. For venues, artists and audiences alike, it has been hailed as a long-overdue step towards building a safer, more accessible and thriving night-time landscape.

However, the rollout faces potential delays. Transport unions GMB and Unite have signalled they may refuse to engage in talks on the new service until Translink resolves a long-running pay claim for Platform Grade staff, first submitted in June. In a letter sent on 26 September, the unions accused management of failing to begin discussions despite repeated approaches.

While negotiations remain ongoing, many across the sector hope the service can proceed as planned, with improved late-night transport widely recognised as essential to Belfast’s ambitions as a UNESCO City of Music and to the continued growth of its night-time economy.
