A significant boost has just landed for musicians, bands and community ensembles across NI. On 19th June, the Department for Communities announced a major new round of investment into the Musical Instruments Scheme, with a total fund of £750,000 available.

Delivered by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the scheme is designed to support the purchase of new instruments for use by both individual musicians and a wide range of musical groups, from pipe bands and jazz outfits to classical ensembles and traditional groups. Applications are now open, with a deadline of 1 August 2025.

This year’s fund is one of the largest in recent memory and reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to enriching musical life across NI. The scheme is open to both amateur and professional musicians, and successful applicants will be reimbursed for the purchase of new or replacement instruments, including those that help expand accessibility, diversity and outreach within music-making.

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons described the scheme as “a vital way of supporting the musical ecosystem here in Northern Ireland – from grassroots right through to the professional stage.” He added that the funding will “help strengthen our musical traditions and provide much-needed backing to groups and artists who are inspiring the next generation of talent.”

All instruments must be purchased and delivered by 31 March 2026. In previous years, recipients have included community brass bands, youth orchestras, traditional music collectives, and solo artists in need of high-quality tools to help push their creative work forward.

For any artists, bands or organisations in need of new gear, this scheme represents a significant opportunity. Full guidance, eligibility and application information is available now via the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
