Belfast City Council has introduced the Music Matters internship programme, a new initiative to support the growth of the city’s music industry.

As part of its status as a UNESCO City of Music, Belfast is committed to fostering opportunities for emerging talent, and this programme is designed to create pathways into the industry for aspiring professionals.

In collaboration with early talent experts Workplus, the council will offer funding to seven local music businesses, providing up to £5,000 to help cover the costs of employing an intern for six months. The internships will aim to provide hands-on experience in various roles within the music sector, giving school leavers and career changers a valuable opportunity to get started in the industry.

Ruth Harper, Partnerships Development Manager at Workplus, highlighted the significance of the programme: “We’re excited to be working with Belfast City Council on the Music Matters programme. It’s a great initiative which supports both employers and early talent. While it’s fantastic to see a thriving music industry in Belfast, it can be difficult to know where to start to find employment opportunities. This programme is for anyone with the passion for the industry, a willingness to learn and can-do attitude.”

Belfast’s music industry is a vital part of the local economy, directly employing over 1,780 people and supporting another 560 jobs indirectly. The music ecosystem in the city contributes £89.2 million in economic output, with a GVA of £43 million.

Local music businesses interested in taking part have until 8th November to apply. A webinar for potential participants will take place on 23rd October at 11am, providing more details about the programme. Internship applications will open on 25th November and close on 20th December.
